What is a PICC line?
PICC stands for peripherally inserted central catheter. It is an IV inserted near the bend of the arm, but is longer and extends past the shoulder and ends just before the heart. Because it is longer and ends more central to the body it can be used for medications that require a length of therapy of more than three weeks. By using this central vein medications are less irritating to the veins than when regular short IV sites are used. To be safe and make sure the IV is in the right place, a chest x-ray is needed before the IV can be used.
